Summer fun - Children's Museum

I have tried to do something fun with Kaelyn every Friday since she doesn't have autism summer camp on Fridays.  I knew that there was some kind of children's museum in Jensen Beach so we decided to check it out.  It is small but it is super cool and Kaelyn had a blast there.  One whole side of the building is set up like a town and kids can dress up and pretend they're doing different jobs.  There was a garage with a taxi with its hood up.  You could unscrew the tires and take them off and change them, pretend to change the oil and several other things.  Then there was a kid's sized grocery store stocked with real sized boxes and containers of pretend food.  The house had three different house building projects you could do.  There were stencils and paper so you could design your own blueprint, there were building blocks, and then these large conncectable slats of wood where you could build larger structures.  There was a toddler beach themed play area, a vet, a health/learning room, a pretend post office area and a firetruck right in the center.  The other side of the building had a huge ship that you could climb up in and learn and practice doing all kinds of things that sailors used to do on ships.  There were plastic balls that you could load into the ship's cannons and shoot them and they landed down on the floor level.  Kaelyn didn't want to try that because it was too loud for her but I thought it looked like a lot of fun.  This is just the first part of the pictures I am going to post.

There was a full firefighter's outfit the kids could put on (a picture of that later).

Kaelyn LOVED the veterinarian clinic.  Here she is getting an animal from one of the kennels.  They had lots of different kinds of stuffed animals in the kennels for kids to use.  Of course Kaelyn already had a couple of her ever-present pals with her.

She decided to use Garmin and Kecky the first time she played in there.

Listening to Garmin's heart.
Notice the x-ray illuminator behind her (and yes, I totally had to google what those are called).  It was divided into two sides and you could turn the light on and off for either side.  There was a pocket with a bunch of x-rays of various kinds of animals below the board.

Dr. Mosenthin  :-)

These were all the bins of doctors tools and you can also see all the lab coats hanging there for kids to wear.  There were blood pressure cuffs, needles, tweezers, stethoscopes along with other things that I don't begin to know the proper terms for.  :-)
(For instance, the reflex hit your knee thingy - see what I mean?) :-D

They had the perfect size carts, a kid-sized register and bakery counter, and all the shelves were on the kids' level.  I love the small scale produce scale (forgive the pun).

Getting some fresh produce from the refrigerator area.

Paying for her stuff.  As for the cashier, it was just kind of whichever kid was there and wanted to do it.  Surprisingly, most of the kids seemed to enjoy filling their carts (shopping) and there wasn't a big demand to be the cashier.  When we came back in later, there was a whole line of kids waiting to "pay" and the current cashier was ready to leave so several of the kids asked Kaelyn if she wanted to do it and she was the cashier for awhile (more pictures of that later as well).

The post office wasn't actually a separate room.  It was just these boxes and there were outfits you could put on and mail to sort and deliver.  The cool thing about it was that each place (the house, grocery store, garage, etc.) had a mailbox and there was lots of mail addressed to the different places.  Kaelyn didn't spend long doing this but I saw some of the kids sorting mail, putting it in the bags and carrying it all over to the different places.

She just put the outfit on to humor me so I could get a couple pictures, thus the pictures I got weren't very good because she was distracted and ready to move on to something else.

This was in the house.  In all the different places, there were lots of posters that taught all kinds of things so besides learning by playing, there was a lot of other things kids could learn by reading about stuff.

This was right down Kaelyn's line of interest.  On one wall of the house, they had things explaining the process of building houses.  On another wall they had pictures and descriptions of different kinds of Florida houses throughout the years.  But on this wall, they had an activity where you could match each kid from a different part of the world to what kind of house he or she lives in.  The "thumbtacks" on the map showed where they lived and there was a description of what kind of house they lived in next to their pictures.  Then you had to look at the pictures of the houses below and try to guess which kind of house went with each kid.  You lifted it up to see if you were right and read more about it.  Kaelyn loves maps and is very interested in other countries so she enjoyed seeing the different style houses.

The "outside" of the house.

The ship.

Kaelyn really had fun with this activity on the ship.  There was a sign explaining how sailors would use different flags for different letters to convey mesages.  The sign had a whole code of the different flags for each letter of the alphabet.  The barrel had all the different flags so you could find the flags for whatever letters you wanted (for instance, your initials).  The flags had little loops on them so you could just clip them on and then raise and lower the flags.  I think you could put up to three different letters (flags) on at one time.

This was in the room about your body/health.  Most of the stuff was a little "too old" for Kaelyn's interest but this was kind of interesting to her.  You sat on the bike and pedaled and it was connected to the skeleton on the bike so you could see what your bones are doing as you are pedaling a bike.

The firefighter outfit.  It was a regular uniform donated by the Port St. Lucie fire department so it was huge on her.  The helmets were just pretend ones though of course.  Since the coat went all the way down to her ankles, there was no way we were getting the pants/suspenders on her.  :-)

Changing a tire on the taxi.

Getting a new tire off the rack.

These were some of the tools you could use.  I have a couple nephews that I think would LOVE this particular thing and could probably spend a lot more time "working on" the car!!!

In the same parking lot as the museum, there is a free water fountains play area for kids besides the fact that all of it is along the Indian River.  Several years ago, we took Kaelyn to play in the fountains a few different times.  At that time, they were in the process of finishing the inside of the children's musem.  After Kaelyn had played in the museum for an hour or two, she wanted to go play in the fountains.  So I sat under a big tree and read while she played.  Then we walked down into the river, which is only about shin deep on me for a good ways out.  She cooled off and played in the water for a bit, then she wanted to go back into the museum and play.  Your admission to the museum is good all day and lots of people were doing both.  We went back and she played a while longer.  She tried a couple things she hadn't done yet and of course, I got more pictures so I'll be posting fountain pictures and a few more museum pictures next time.

When we were at SeaWorld back in the beginning of June we were at the dolphin nursery looking at the baby dolphins and their mamas.  There was also one pregnant dolphin in the pool.  Today I saw on facebook that a baby dolphin was just born last Saturday morning.  I don't know if any of you will find this interesting but I read it to Kaelyn and showed her the picture and she loved it.  This is what I copied from facebook:
" SeaWorld Orlando Welcomes Baby Dolphin
A dolphin calf was born Saturday morning 6/30/12 at 8:47 a.m. at SeaWorld Orlando. The young calf’s sex is unknown at this time, but it has been seen nursing and bonding with its mom, Starkey, both a good indication that the calf is doing well. This is Starkey’s sixth birth. Park guests can see the pair at SeaWorld’s Dolphin Nursery where pregnant dolphins, new mothers, their calves and experienced moms live together."

Isn't it cute?   :-)

Sweet Summertime

I was doing so good keeping up with blogging and I was certain that once summer got here, it would be super easy to blog every little thing we did.  Was I ever wrong!  We have kept so busy and have been having so much fun that I have hardly been sitting down at the computer.  I'm barely keeping up with getting pictures from my phone and the camera onto the computer.  Between swim lessons, autism summer camp, our new pool, playing racquetball, etc. we have just had a great (and busy) summer so far!!
So here is the first batch of pictures of what we've been doing.

We:
Went to the park a few times in the evening before it started getting miserably hot all hours of the day...
Garmin in one of the baby swings.

Garmin and Kecky got to come on this particular park trip.  They got to swing, go down the slide, and ride the dinosaur.  However, they did NOT scream bloody murder when they saw a couple little bugs like someone else at the park with them did!!!

Lady and the Tramp got to go too but since they're the adults/parents, they had to sit on the bench with me where I was sitting reading a magazine.

I've never figured out where Kaelyn came up with calling all her stuffed animals "pals" but I don't think there could be a more appropriate "title" for them.  They really are all her pals and she always has a few of them with her going everywhere she goes and doing everything she does.

[We:]
have been spending lots of time in our new pool...
We just put up a sixteen foot pool the beginning of June.  It's about four feet deep and the perfect depth for us - yes, even for me.  :-)  I have sat on this floating chair a few times and read a magazine.  After Kaelyn saw me do it the first time, the next time we got in the pool she climbed up on it and asked us to get her her most recent Phineas and Ferb magazine.  I didn't think she would actually sit and read it because it's tricky to sit and read without your magazine getting completely soaked.  She did though and probably sat like that for fifteen or twenty minutes.  It scares me how much she wants to do EVERYTHING just like me!  (but I did think this was particularly cute)

[We:]
have spent lots of time trying to catch lizards...

Lizards aren't really my thing.  I've been in Florida for almost fifteen years now (minus a year in NY) so I am used to them enough that I don't flip out over them but I don't really care that much for them either.  We have a great arrangement: usually, as I walk by, they skitter out of sight and out of my way.  And that works out just fine - I don't bother them as long as they don't get in my house.  Kaelyn has this little bug catcher thingy though and she got the great idea of catching lizards in it.  Now mind you, this girl is TERRIFIED of insects.  I mean "blood curdling scream cause she spotted a gnat four feet away" kind of terrified.  (It's actually a big problem and we're not sure where the phobia all the sudden came from or what to do about it but I digress.)  Point is, I don't see how a person can be terrified of an ant crawling on the ground that you can barely see and yet not be bothered by a skittery, ugly lizard.  But I'm not about to suggest to her that she should be afraid of lizards too so I bravely set about one afternoon to help her after she had already tried in vain a few other days to catch one.  It turned into a whole event because Kevin got home from work while we were lizard hunting and then Brittany Brown came down because we were going to eat supper together since her family is away.  Finally, between three adults, a pool skimmer, and Kaelyn's bug catcher, we were able to get a baby one.  It didn't survive the ordeal very well - actually, it didn't survive at all but it seemed to cure Kaelyn's "itch" (at least momentarily) to catch one.
Hopefully we won't be spending a lot more time on THAT activity!!!

[We:]
bought a baby doll stroller for Kaelyn's pals...

Kaelyn had a Target gift card from her Uncle Tim from Christmas.  She rarely finds things that she really, really wants so I usually save gift cards till I hear her mention something repeatedly or something that I know she'll actually play with when she gets it home.  She started talking about buying a stroller for her pals so we went one day and found this one at Target.  We have already taken it lots of places with us and I was so glad she had the gift card and that we waited to use it for something that she really wanted.

Ellie and Hello Kitty are in the stroller and Garmin got to ride in her Hello Kitty purse - her idea.  I thought it was SO cute!

[We:]
went to a restaurant called Dune Dogs and got this super cool balloon!
Dune Dogs is an outdoorsy, hot dog/seafood, Florida-ish type restaurant.  We went one evening with Britt.  It was kid's night so kids eat for 99¢ and there was a guy doing balloon art for the kids.  It was incredible!  I've never seen anyone who could make so many things and do it so quickly.  He made bows and arrows, a Darth Vader mask and light saber, an octupus, Pluto and those are just a few of the things we saw him make for kids at the tables around us.  He made this Hello Kitty one that you can wear on your wrist for Kaelyn.  I was bummed that I'm not a kid and didn't get to choose one.  I would have gotten Donald Duck!  :-)

[We:]
made Buster sit on a chair???...
I included this picture mostly just because it amuses me.  Poor Buster!  I'm not sure what Kaelyn was trying to accomplish here.  See, she watches America's Funniest Videos where people video their pets doing funny things and she watches all these dog training videos on youtube and then she tries to "train" Buster or get him to do things.  She kept making him jump from the freezer on to the chair and she seemed to think it was hilarious to have him sit in a chair like she was.  She asked us to take a picture.  If Buster could talk, I'm pretty sure he would say, "Someone just shoot me now!"

[We:]
found a cool pal for Daddy for Father's Day...
Kaelyn was SURE that we should get Kevin some kind of  "pal" for Father's Day since he doesn't really have any and none of us could think of anything else to get him.  It actually turned out kind of cute/cool because we happened to find a pal from one of the games that Kevin and Kaelyn both like to play on their phone/pad.

They both like the game equally as much I would say.  It's called "Where's My Water?" and the main character is an alligator named "Swampy".

It was absolutely KILLING her not being able to show it to Kevin when we found it at the store.  I had to stop her several times from getting it out of the cart and showing him.  None of us had ever seen the plush toys from the game before and she was dying for him to see what we had found!
:-)

Aren't they cute?

[We:]
went bowling one Friday afternoon...
We have been bowling a couple other times but Kaelyn was too young to remember.  The bowling alley is part of a group of bowling alleys that has free bowling for kids all summer.  Once you go to the website and register your kid, they get two free games each time.  Her class at school had a small plastic bowling set that she loved to play with so she was very excited to try it out.  She and I went out for lunch first and then went bowling.  We had a great time.  Hopefully we'll make it back one more time before summer ends.

So as you can see, we have been staying busy and having lots of fun as a family this summer.  I am actually loving summer break this year and am dreading school starting back up.  I have lots more pictures to post.  Hopefully, I'll get them up fairly soon.

Soccer - Grand Finale

The last Friday night of soccer was a big picnic and awards.  The soccer league provided/grilled chicken, burger, and hot dogs and then parents brought chips, side dishes, and drinks, etc.  It was a fun night.  The kids did play for a little bit to give them something to do in between eating and when they got their trophies.

The cute number 16 player.  :-)

I love her cute expression here.

Kaelyn and her "buddy" Kayla playing.

Yeah!!! She kicked it in the goal!!!

Kaelyn and Kayla

Walking back in for the trophies and ribbons.

Waiting for her name to be called for her trophy.

When they called her name, she went right up.  She didn't realize that the woman helping had walked away to get another box of trophies with GIRL soccer players on them.  Since no one was there handing them out, she just helped herself and reached in the box that was there.  (That's why the box says "male" on it.)

Checking out her trophy.  This is the first trophy that she has ever gotten for anything and she was SO proud.  I wasn't sure if she knew what trophies were but she had definitely figured out that it was an award.
(And by the way, the giraffe pal she is holding is "Sornando", so named by her.)

Sweet and adorable.

Kaelyn and Ross with their trophies and ribbons.

Hugs for her buddy.  Hopefully she will be able to get the same buddy again next year.  It seems like they try to do that with as many of the kids as possible.  Several of Kaelyn's friends had the same buddies that they had the previous year.

All in all, the special needs soccer was a FANTASTIC program.  It was well organized and Kaelyn loved it.  We definitely plan to do it again next year.
